Lions Clubs International Sponsorship/Growth Pins.
October, Jan-Feb-March, and Legacy of Lions Growth Explanations And Pins
1957-1999

In 1957, the board of directors of Lions Clubs International created the “Lions International Anniversary Membership Development Program” conducted in October.  October was chosen to celebrate the 40th year of Lions, founded in 1917 as the International Association of Lions Clubs. The 1957 charm and gold variation below on this website could be the first award issued in this program. In 1963, documentation of the first “known” October growth pin appeared in the ads of The Lion magazine. In 1969 the growth pins expanded to the January-February-March pins. Lions International attempted a MilLION Member program  in 1969. Unfortunately they did not reach their goal as in this ad from May 1969.   There were a few variations of growth pins in the months of the 1970’s.
In addition to the
January-February-March pin in 1973, Lions International announced the Millionth Members Awards Program. That year LCI reached that goal with Barney Gill being the Millionth member..
In 1992 no pin was issued and the “First Lion” program was started. You brought in a new member and you were issued a card, this program only lasted that fiscal year.  In 1995 the “Legacy of Lions” growth pins where added for the months of February, March, & April . Meaning that if
The Legacy of Lion pin was issued for the 1995-1996 fiscal year it would be for the months of February, March, & April of 1996. 1996-1997 would be for the months of February, March, & April of 1997 etc (A little confusing). The sponsorship/growth awards are complex with various degrees of levels. Simply put, you sponsor a new member and you received a pin after your club secretary filled out the appropriate form (circa 1980). The growth pins coincided with the “Key Awards” which has it’s own guidelines. Instead of explanations, I will let the website take you through the history with the pins, articles, and ads. In 2008 the October Membership Growth Program was re-establish. Not in the form of a pin but all clubs participating in the October Membership Growth Program will receive a banner patch as well as name recognition on a section of the Lions Clubs International Web site. Webmaster note: all pins are actual size except the "I'll Get Mine for Dave & Bob" buttons, and the Million Member Card & First Lion cards...(note this webpage is a work in progress.)
